A Dhaka court on Wednesday directed authorities to formally show former state minister for industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder arrested in an arms case filed with Banani Police Station.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman passed the order after approving an application by the investigating officer. The veteran politician of the ousted Awami League government, already jailed in multiple murder cases, was produced before the court at around noon.

In a dramatic turn, as the magistrate prepared to leave after approving the arrest order, Majumder attempted to address the court, stating, “Your Honor, I wish to say something about this matter.” To which, the judge exited without responding.

Prison authorities then escorted the handcuffed former minister – wearing a helmet and bulletproof vest – from the courtroom.

The case stems from Majumder’s alleged failure to surrender two licensed firearms within the 3 September 2024 deadline set by a government notification. The 25 August 2023 circular had suspended all ‘personal security’ weapon licenses issued between 6 January 2009 and 5 August 2024.

Banani Station Sub Inspector Md Jane Alam Dulal filed the case under Section 19(1) of the Arms Act after investigators found no record of Majumder submitting his weapons. Attempts to locate him at his license-registered address also proved unsuccessful.

Majumder has been incarcerated since 18 October last year when police arrested him from his Gulshan residence. He remains detained after completing remand periods in multiple murder and attempted murder cases.
