A fire at the Matarbari coal-fired power plant scrap yard in Cox’s Bazar was brought under control after nearly nine hours of frantic firefighting efforts.
The blaze erupted around 9 pm on Monday at the scrap yard located near the power plant complex. Firefighters rushed to the scene and worked throughout the night to contain the flames.
After prolonged efforts, the fire was brought under control around 5:45am on Tuesday. No immediate reports of casualties were available at the time of filing this report.
However, the fire did not affect the main plant of the power station. It occurred in the scrap yard, where wood and other unused materials had been piled up.
Ram Prasad Sen, acting station officer of Maheshkhali Fire Service and Civil Defense, confirmed the matter.
He said that although the fire burned for a long time, there was no major damage. The extent of losses has not yet been determined. He added that two fire service units worked to bring the blaze under control.
On Monday night, locals reported that they suddenly noticed flames inside the power plant compound while standing on the nearby bridge.
Maheshkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Imran Mahmud said the cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
