RAB-7 has arrested two main accused in the case of the rape and murder of 12-year-old child Srabonti Ghosh in Khulshi, Chattogram. They were arrested within 23 hours of the incident.
The two arrested are Pradip Lal Ghosh (52) and Ajay Singh (25).
They were arrested from the Bhandari Market area of Lalkhan Bazar under Khulshi police station around 11:30am on Thursday, RAB has informed.
The deceased Srabonti Ghosh was the daughter of Tapan Ghosh and Rosy Ghosh from Amilaish village, Satkania upazila. Along with her family, she lived as a tenant in the house of Prodip Ghosh in the water tank area of Lalkhan Bazar, Khulshi, Chattogram.
Both of the victim’s parents are garment workers. Her father would come home once a week, and her mother would go to work at noon and return home late at night. During this time, Srabonti and her younger brother stayed at home.
The family claims that on 3 January, at around 9pm, Srabonti came to her rented house from her grandfather’s house without informing anyone. Later, around 11:45pm, her grandfather went to the rented house and found her hanging with her scarf wrapped around the ceiling rod.
Upon receiving the news, her mother and locals came to the scene and, with police assistance, took her to Chittagong Medical College (CMCH) Hospital where the doctor declared her dead.
The victim’s family alleges that Srabonti was raped and then murdered, and the body was hanged as a distraction. Later, as part of the legal process, an autopsy and rape test were completed on the body.
Regarding this incident, the deceased’s mother, Rosy Ghosh, filed a case at Khulshi police station, making Pradip Lal Ghosh, Ajay Singh, and two or three other unknown individuals accused. The case was filed under Section 9(3) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000 (Amendment/2025).
Assistant Director (Media) of RAB-7, ARM Mozzaffar Hossain, said that based on a tip, confirming the location of the accused, an operation was conducted and they were arrested. The arrested individuals have been handed over to Khulshi police station for subsequent legal action.
Prior to this, on Wednesday, the Officer-in-Charge (in charge) of Khulshi police station, Zahidul Islam, said that an unnatural death case (No.-01/26) was filed at the station regarding this incident. Preliminary indications suggest it was a suicide.
After completing the autopsy and necessary legal procedures, the body was handed over to the family on Wednesday.
