Unknown assailants opened fire at a leader of the NCP in Gazipur on Thursday and stole his motorcycle in the process.
The attack took place around noon in front of the Baitun Noor Jame Masjid in Mogorkhal Joytitala Dakkhinpara under Basan Police Station.
The victim, Habib Chowdhury, a member of the NCP’s Gazipur City Committee and son of Fotik Chan from Sonargaon, Narayanganj, resides in the Mogrkhal area.
Habib said that he had listed his Yamaha R-15 motorcycle for sale on the online platform “bikroy.com.” Two individuals contacted him, expressing interest in buying the bike. On Thursday morning, they came to Mogorkhal to inspect it and spent nearly an hour examining the vehicle.
During a test ride, one of the men drew a firearm and fired a shot at Habib before fleeing with the motorcycle. The bullet did not hit him.
Though Habib chased the attackers, they escaped, spreading panic in the area.
Speaking about the attack, Habib said he is preparing to take legal action.
Ali Nasir Khan, NCP’s joint chief coordinator for the Northern Region, called the incident a “planned attack.” He said Habib was deliberately targeted and warned that had the gunshot hit him, he would have been killed in the same manner as martyr Hadi.
Nasir condemned the attack and demanded that the perpetrators and those behind the attack be arrested within 12 hours and face exemplary punishment under the law.
Basan Police Station OC Harun-Or-Rashid said police are working to identify and apprehend perpetrators.
