BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has commented that to fulfill popular aspirations, the benefits of development must reach the people of the country wherever they may be and that can only be achieved through democratising the nation’s economy.

The BNP leader made the statement during a doa mahfil (prayer gathering) organized by the Zia Parishad at the National Press Club auditorium in memory of BNP’s late Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia on Wednesday.

He said, “People aspire towards a happy, prosperous, welfare-oriented democratic Bangladesh. For this, so much sacrifice, so much imprisonment and persecution, so many cases and instances of enforced disappearances in the past one and a half decades. Now the time has come for change. The benefits of Bangladesh’s development must reach every citizen, must reach the doorsteps of the people. Every citizen must become a stakeholder in Bangladesh’s development and economy. That is, democracy only in politics will not suffice; the country’s economy must be democratised.”

Referring to the plan formulated by BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman to rebuild the nation, Amir Khosru said, “We can only implement this vast framework if we work together. Tarique Rahman cannot do this alone, the government cannot do this by itself. It requires partnership. Everyone must get involved here; it requires alliance.”

Regarding BNP’s late Chairperson Khaleda Zia, Khosru said that she carried the torch of democracy for the nation for a long time.

“That torch has now been passed on Tarique Rahman. In the days ahead, as the torchbearer of democracy, he will receive the leadership of the country,” he added.

Chaired by Zia Parishad Chairman Abdul Latif and conducted by Abul Kalam Azad, the speakers at the remembrance meeting included member of BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and Zia Parishad Secretary General Emtaz Hossain, among others.
