Candidates from the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami have submitted their nomination papers for the Cox’s Bazar-4 constituency, comprising Ukhiya and Teknaf upazilas, in the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
Their asset and income details were disclosed from the affidavits filed with the nominations.
BNP candidate Shahjahan Chowdhury, president of Cox’s Bazar district BNP and a former member of parliament, has declared annual income of nearly Tk 12 lakh.
According to his affidavit, he earns Tk 6.09 lakh from house rent, Tk 1.12 lakh from agriculture and Tk 4.50 lakh from fisheries each year.
He declared immovable assets with an estimated current value of Tk 10 crore. These include 15 acres of agricultural land, 0.52 acres of non-agricultural land, 20.66 acres of government-leased land, a house and two and a half flats received from a developer.
He reported Tk 1.15 lakh in cash and Tk 24.19 lakh deposited in bank accounts. His movable assets include a shotgun, a revolver, a Proton jeep and 10 bhori of gold. He valued these movable assets at around Tk 90 lakh.
The affidavit states that he has no loans or liabilities. His educational qualification is a BA (Hons).
Meanwhile, Cox’s Bazar district Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer, Principal Nur Ahmad Anwari, also submitted his nomination to contest the seat.
His affidavit shows immovable assets comprising a house and 0.6 acres of land, with an estimated value of Tk 18.26 lakh.
He declared no cash holdings but reported bank deposits of Tk 15.24 lakh. He also owns 10 bhori of gold. The affidavit places the total value of his movable assets at Tk 3,324,349.
Anwari reported an annual income of Tk 4.57 lakh from his teaching profession and Tk 1.20 lakh as an honorarium for serving as a Union Parishad chairman.
He stepped down after serving as chairman of Hwaikyang Union in Teknaf upazila for 22 years since 2003. This marks his first bid for a seat in the national parliament.
Scrutiny of nomination papers for the Cox’s Bazar-4 constituency will take place at the district returning officer’s office at 12pm on 3 January.
A total of four candidates, including Jamaat nominees, have submitted papers against Shahjahan Chowdhury in the seat.
