Nearly two decades after it last aired, ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ is returning to screens, with its original stars reuniting for a new limited revival set to premiere this April.
Hulu has released the first trailer for the four-part event series, titled ‘Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair’, confirming an April 10 launch. The revival revisits the famously chaotic family with Malcolm now grown up, played once again by Frankie Muniz, and reluctantly drawn back into his parents’ orbit after years of keeping his distance.
The new story follows Malcolm as he returns home with his young daughter, portrayed by Keeley Karsten, after being summoned by his parents Hal and Lois for their 40th wedding anniversary. Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek reprise their roles, reigniting the combustible family dynamic that made the original series a cult favourite. In the trailer, Malcolm claims his life only improved once he stayed away from his family, a peace that is quickly undone.
Originally broadcast on Fox from 2000 to 2006, Malcolm in the Middle ran for seven seasons and was praised for its sharp humour and unconventional portrayal of suburban family life. Most of the original cast are returning, including Justin Berfield, Christopher Masterson and Emy Coligado. The role of Dewey has been recast, with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark stepping into the part. New additions to the ensemble include Vaughan Murrae and Kiana Madeira.
Series creator Linwood Boomer returns as writer and executive producer, maintaining continuity with the original show’s voice. Cranston also serves as an executive producer alongside a team that includes Gail Berman and representatives from New Regency. All four episodes have been directed by Ken Kwapis.
