The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has failed to submit the investigation report in the murder case of journalists Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi to the court. Consequently, the deadline for submitting the investigation report has been extended for the 122nd time.
The scheduled date for submitting the report at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka was Sunday. However, as the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has yet to complete its investigation, it was not possible to submit the report to the court.
Subsequently, Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam set 5 January as the new deadline for submitting the investigation report. Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam, an officer of the General Registration Branch of the Mirpur Model Police Station court, confirmed the matter to TIMES of Bangladesh.
Previously, after a long gap of 12 years, the responsibility for investigation of the case was transferred from RAB to the PBI on 4 November 2024, resulting in the agency starting a fresh investigation into the double murder.
On 11 February 2012, the journalists (who were also married) were murdered in their rented flat in West Rajabazar of the capital. Subsequently, Runi’s brother, Nowsher Alam, filed the case with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
