Biplobi Chhatra Moitree’s Dhaka University unit has called on the authorities to take urgent and effective measures to address the ongoing accommodation and academic crisis, warning that the recently declared emergency closure may lead to a significant session jam.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the student organisation said that recurrent earthquakes had revealed fresh cracks and structural risks in several residential halls.
Amid heightened concerns over safety, many hall residents, “apprehensive about insecurity,” were compelled to take temporary shelter in staff quarters and other available spaces, it added.
Subsequently, the authorities declared the university closed for “risk assessment” and “renovation”.
Chhatra Moitree reported that, as the emergency time off coincides with the winter break, extending the closure, concerns about a delayed academic year have emerged. With exams suspended, anxiety among students about a session jam has intensified.
A significant amount of time has passed, yet no visible renovation work has begun, nor has any survey report been been published.
The organisation noted that the utilisation of newly allocated funds and the progress of renovations have still not been disclosed. Despite the construction of new buildings, the renovation efforts remain largely limited.
In this situation, Chhatra Moitree demanded that the administration take swift action to avoid a session jam, publish the renovation and risk assessment reports, and make the accommodation plan transparent and accountable.
