Panchagarh, the northernmost district of Bangladesh, is experiencing a surge in winter’s intensity as the mercury dropped to 14.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday morning.
This is the lowest temperature recorded this season for a Tuesday, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
The Tetulia Meteorological Observatory reported a temperature of 14.5°C at 9am, with humidity levels reaching 97 percent. On Monday morning, the temperature was 16.5°C.
Many residents have already begun using blankets, sweaters, and shawls to stay warm. Despite sunny days, the chill intensifies as night falls across the district.
As winter tightens its grip, demand for warm clothing has increased in Panchagarh and surrounding areas. Traditional rural markets are seeing a rise in sales of old blankets, shawls, and jackets.
Nur Islam, a resident of the Banglabandha land port area, said, “Even though the sun shines during the day, the cold is felt at night. Winter will gradually become more severe.”
Moksed Ali, from Bhajanpur in Tetulia, echoed the concern, saying, “Every year, severe cold arrives, but we do not get enough warm clothing. Since winter has begun, it is important that warm clothes are distributed to the poor in advance.”
Jitendranath Roy, acting officer of the Tetulia Meteorological Observatory, said, “This region is known for being one of the coldest areas in the country. Over the past few days, temperatures have fluctuated between 16°C and 14°C. This morning, it dropped to 14.5°C, increasing the cold’s intensity. Temperatures may fall further in the coming days.”
The Chuadanga weather office reported that the temperature dropped to 15.9°C at 6am. Daily wage earners and others experienced discomfort, with many heading out in warm clothing. The combination of a chilly breeze and mild cold has affected both urban and rural areas. The meteorological office noted that daytime temperatures may rise slightly, but nights and early mornings are expected to get colder. At 9am, humidity was recorded at 83 percent.
According to the BMD, nighttime temperatures may fall by 1–2°C, and daytime temperatures may decrease slightly across the country on Tuesday.
