Jahangirnagar University (JU) has suspended eight students of its Physics Department over allegations of ragging junior students from the department’s 55th batch.
The university administration issued an office order on Tuesday, signed by acting Registrar ABM Azizur Rahman, announcing the temporary suspension of the students.
According to the order, several students of the department’s 54th batch allegedly took some first-year students of the 2025-26 academic session to a room beside the Old Arts Building between 10pm and 1am on 20 July.
The junior students were allegedly subjected to mental harassment and intimidation during the incident.
The matter came to the attention of the university authorities after a related post and information spread on social media.
Under Section 5(6) of the University’s Students’ Discipline Ordinance-2018, teasing, ragging and all forms of abusive activities at residential halls, departments and on campus are prohibited.
Following a preliminary inquiry into the allegations, the university authorities decided to suspend the eight students pending further action.
The suspended students are Md Fazle Hasan Fahad, Md Al-Amin Hossain, Md Zahid Hasan, Md Faisal Ahmed, Md Mahmudul Hasan Khan Akib, Md Mahmudul Amin Siam, Md Mostafizur Rahman and Syed Sakib Ahmed Ratul.
All eight are students of the 54th batch of the Physics Department and residents of different residential halls of the university.
The administration has instructed the relevant offices to take necessary measures regarding the incident.
