Four people were killed and several others injured when a sand-laden truck overturned at a market in Rajshahi’s Puthia upazila on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Siam, son of Shahin Ali of Kafuria village in Natore Sadar upazila; Munaker Pramanik, son of Akkel Pramanik of Paikpara village; Sentu, son of Soyem Uddin of Salainagar village in Bagatipara upazila of Natore; and Islam Uddin, son of the late Mahatab Ali of Askarpur village in Charghat upazila of Rajshahi.
Police said it is initially assumed that the deceased were banana traders. One of the bodies was taken home, while police recovered three others from the scene.
Firefighters received information about the incident at 7:50am. Two units from the Puthia Fire Service Station and the Natore Fire Service Station rushed to the scene at 7:55am and carried out rescue operations.
The accident occurred after the driver lost control of the steering due to dense fog, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence and Puthia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Bari Munshi.
Injured Raihan Ali, son of Abdul Jalil Uddin of Khutipara village, was taken to Puthia Upazila Health Complex. He was later transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, said sources at the hospital’s police camp.
