Thirty-nine candidates have been elected unopposed in the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) and hall students’ union elections, according to the Election Commission.
Chief Returning Officer Mohammad Setaur Rahman said on Monday that of them, 36 are from six female halls and three from one male hall.
Among those elected unopposed are three from Bijoy-24 Hall, one from Mannujan Hall, six from Rokeya Hall, three from Taposhi Rabeya Hall, ten from Begum Khaleda Zia Hall, nine from Rahamatunnesa Hall and seven from July-36 Hall.
However, four female halls will have vacant posts as no candidates submitted nomination papers. These include the assistant debate and literature secretary post at Begum Khaleda Zia Hall, and executive member posts at Rokeya, July-36 and Rahamatunnesa halls.
“The halls will function with the existing representatives as there is no provision to fill the vacant positions,” said Setaur.
The RUCSU elections are scheduled for September 25 this year. A total of 903 candidates is contesting for seats in the central union, senate and hall unions. Of them, 248 are vying for the central body, 58 for the senate, and 597 across 17 residential halls.
The commission said 18 candidates are competing for the post of vice president, 13 for general secretary and 16 for assistant general secretary in the central union. For hall-based posts, 61 are contesting for vice president, 58 for general secretary and 57 for assistant general secretary.
In the six female halls, 16 candidates are contesting for vice president, 16 for general secretary and 15 for assistant general secretary. According to the Election Commission, there are 28,905 registered voters in total, including 17,596 male voters and 11,305 female voters.
