At least 32 people were killed in the capital during the Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar on 5 May 2013, according to information obtained by Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam.

Aminul announced on Sunday, that investigation into the killings, which took place during the Awami League’s administration, is nearing its conclusion.

Speaking to journalists at his office, the chief prosecutor expressed confidence that the final investigation report will be submitted by the scheduled deadline of 7 June.

Prosecution sources have also indicated that while the case is currently under investigation, Mamun may be formally named as an accused if necessary information and evidence are secured.

Arrests and legal complaints

The legal proceedings were initiated following a complaint lodged with the Chief Prosecutor’s office by Hefazat-e-Islam leader Azizul Haque. The complaint was filed on behalf of Hefazat leaders Junaid Al Habib and Mawlana Mamunul Haque, naming a total of 21 individuals as accused.

Six suspects have already been arrested in connection with the case, including former state minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Huq Tuku, retired Major General Ziaul Ahsan, and former inspector general of police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque.

Other arrested individuals are former deputy inspector general (DIG) Molla Nazrul Islam, Shahriar Kabir, who serves as the president of the Advisory Board of the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, and former DIG Abdul Jalil Mondal.

Prominent figures named as accused

The list of the 21 accused individuals encompasses several high-ranking members of the former government and civil society.

Among the political figures named are Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former ministers Rashed Khan Menon and Hasan Mahmud, former mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, and former lawmakers Haji Selim and Shamim Osman.

The list further includes former prime ministerial advisors Salman F Rahman and Tarique Ahmed Siddique, former IGP Benazir Ahmed, and former chief of army staff Aziz Ahmed.

Security officials such as additional commissioner (DB) of the DMP Harun or Rashid, former deputy commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker, and NSI official Md Monjur Ahmed are also cited.

The complaint also names several figures from academia and the media, including Prof Muntasir Mamoon, former ICT Prosecutor Turin Afroz, and Imran H Sarker, the convener of the Gonojagoron Mancho.

Other media personalities listed as accused are Mozammel Haque Babu, the former CEO of Ekattor TV, Ahmed Jobaer, the former MD and CEO of Somoy TV, Subhash Singha Roy, editor of ABnews24.com, and Nayeemul Islam Khan, the former press secretary to the prime minister.
