ICT extends probe report deadline for Shapla Chattar killings case

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on Sunday extended the deadline for submitting the investigation report in a case involving crimes against humanity, including murder and torture, during the Hefazat-e-Islam assembly at Shapla Chattar.

The case identifies deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and several others as accused.

Court has ordered the prosecution to file the investigation report by 7 June. The order followed a plea by Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim, who requested an additional two months to complete the probe.

Application for division

Six individuals have been arrested in connection with the case so far. They are – former state minister for home affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, major general (retd) Ziaul Ahsan, former inspector general of police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque, former deputy inspector general (DIG) Molla Nazrul Islam, former DIG Abdul Jalil Mondal, and President of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Advisory Board Shahriar Kabir.

During the proceedings, Shahriar Kabir’s lawyer Mehedi Hasan applied for division for his client in prison. The application was opposed by Prosecutor Tamim.

Who are the accused?

The case originates from the events of 5 May 2013 at Shapla Chattar. Hefazat-e-Islam leader Azizul Haque filed the complaint with the ICT Chief Prosecutor on behalf of leaders Junaid Al Habib and Maulana Mamunul Haque.

A total of 21 individuals have been named as accused in the case.

Notable names among the accused include Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former ministers Rashed Khan Menon and Hasan Mahmud, former mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, former lawmaker Haji Selim, and former prime ministerial advisers Salman F Rahman and Tarique Ahmed Siddique.

The list further includes former Narayanganj MP Shamim Osman, former IGP Benazir Ahmed, Additional Commissioner (DB) of DMP Harun or Rashid, former DMP Deputy Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker, Professor Muntasir Mamoon, and former ICT prosecutor Tureen Afroz.

Other accused are Ganajagaran Mancha convener Imran H Sarker, former CEO of Ekattor TV Mozammel Haque Babu, former Managing Director and CEO of Somoy TV Ahmed Jobaer, ABnews24.com Editor Subhash Singha Roy, former press secretary to the Prime Minister Nayeemul Islam Khan, former Army Chief Aziz Ahmed, and Md Monjur Ahmed of the National Security Intelligence (NSI).
