Jatrabari killings case: ICT orders probe report by 8 Nov

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 has set 8 November for the submission of the probe report in a case involving allegations of crimes against humanity over the killing of 17 people in Jatrabari during the 2024 July mass uprising.

The tribunal passed the order on Sunday.

Four people have been arrested in the case- former Dhaka-5 lawmaker Kazi Monirul Islam Monu, former officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station Abul Hasan, former general secretary of the Jatrabari thana unit of Awami League Harunur Rashid Munna, and former councillor of Ward 63 of Dhaka South City Corporation Shafiqul Islam Khan.

Eight people were killed in Jatrabari on 18 July 2024, while nine others were killed in the area on 20 July, according to the case documents.

The prosecution says it is examining the killings in Jatrabari during the July uprising as possible acts of genocide and crimes against humanity.

According to prosecution sources, more than 75 people were killed in Jatrabari during the uprising. Of them, between 50 and 55 people were allegedly shot dead on 5 August alone.

The prosecution said 85 names have so far been identified in a preliminary list of those killed in the area, adding that the number could increase after the investigation is completed.

It has also alleged that some police personnel serving under the then government, along with activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, Jubo League and Awami League, were involved in the killings.
