At least 10 people, including three police officers, were injured on Friday during a clash between two factions of supporters of Md Rashed Khan, a defeated BNP parliamentary candidate in Jhenaidah.
The incident occurred around 11:30am within the premises of the Kaliganj Police Station.
According to police sources, the injured officers have been identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Zahid, and Constables Pikul and Selim.
They sustained injuries while attempting to intervene and stop the violence. All three have been admitted to the Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Witnesses and police stated that the conflict originated at Rashed’s party office, located directly in front of the Kaliganj Police Station, where a meeting was being held with BNP activists from the Maharajpur Union of Sadar Upazila.
During the session, a heated argument broke out among the attendees, which quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. As one group was chased by another, they fled into the police station, where the clash continued.
Rashed confirmed the incident, noting that activists had arrived at the office to meet him.
“At one point, the workers became involved in a verbal altercation which suddenly turned into a scuffle,” he said, adding that he was uncertain about the cause of the dispute. He further mentioned that the activists also engaged in arguments with the police when they arrived to pacify the situation.
Md Jellal Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station, stated that the activists began fighting at the nearby party office before the violence spilled onto the road and into the station.
“They entered the station while fighting. Three of our police members were injured while attempting to stop the clash,” the OC added.
