Three people were beaten in front of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s demolished house at Dhanmondi 32 on charges of chanting the “Joy Bangla” slogan, recording video on mobile phone, and distributing singara on Saturday.
The names of those beaten could not be immediately confirmed.
Police have so far detained two in connection with the incident, which took place around 12pm at the entrance road to Dhanmondi 32, police said.
According to police and eyewitnesses, a group of youths led by a man named ANM Ayas assaulted the individuals. They identified themselves as “July fighters.” Ayas introduced himself as the member secretary of the “State Dialogue Forum” (SDF).
Around 11:45am, a rickshaw‑puller was recording video on his mobile phone. Ayas checked the phone and alleged that the video had been sent to a Jubo League member. Followers of Ayas then beat the rickshaw‑puller.
Police arrived at the scene and detained the rickshaw‑puller, taking him to Dhanmondi Police Station.
Meanwhile, another man present shouted “Joy Bangla” and was also beaten. He later fled the scene.
Earlier, around 10:15am, police detained a man named Arnab Das who had come to Dhanmondi 32 to place flowers.
Dhanmondi Police Station Officer‑in‑charge Muhammad Imdadul Islam said Arnab is from Tangail. “He is being interrogated,” he added.
Preliminary information suggests Arnab is an active member of Jubo League, the youth wing of the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned.
