Border Guard Bangladesh has detained two men in Jashore with gold bars worth Tk 21.1 million and later handed them over to the police.
According to the force, members of BGB-49 conducted an early-morning operation on Thursday in the Muradgarh bus stand area of Jashore Sadar after receiving secret information. They detained the two suspects and filed a case before handing them over to Jashore Kotwali Police Station, said Jashore battalion commander Lt Colonel Saifullah Siddiqui.
The detainees were identified as Faridul Islam, 28, from Dakshin Chandpur in Chuadanga’s Damurhuda upazila, and Mahafuz Alam, 31, from Bajipota in Jhenaidah’s Maheshpur upazila.
A search of the two men led to the recovery of 10 gold bars concealed inside their trouser pockets. The gold weighs 1.164 kilograms and has an estimated market value of Tk 21,119,244.
During primary questioning, the two told BGB officials that they had collected the gold from smugglers in Dhaka’s Tantibazar area and were on their way to Chowgacha in Jashore with the intention of smuggling it into India.
