Bangladesh has crossed a significant milestone in overseas employment this year, exporting over one million workers abroad in just the first eleven months.
According to Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET), 10,11,882 people have left Bangladesh for work abroad in the past 11 months. Last year, 10,11,856 Bangladeshis went abroad.
Additionally, in 2023, a total of 13,03,453 Bangladeshi citizens went abroad for work.
BMET sources report that from last year until now, a total of 1,44,61,546 Bangladeshis have received employment opportunities in various countries worldwide. Meanwhile, expatriates sent $21,942.76 million in 2023 and $26,890.8 million in 2024.
According to information from various recruiting agencies and migrant worker rights organisations, overseas employment to some traditional destinations like Malaysia has been somewhat disrupted this year.
However, identifying new foreign job markets along with the high demand for Bangladeshi labour in several countries has helped Bangladesh reach a good position in manpower export.
According to Bangladesh Bank, the remittance inflow from July to November of the current fiscal year has stood at $13.3 billion. During the same period of the previous fiscal year, the amount was $11.13 billion.
Sources have reported that from the first day of this year until November, 6,70,749 and 1,439 Bangladeshis have left for work in the Middle Eastern countries of Saudi Arabia and Qatar, respectively.
Additionally, during this period, 64,326 Bangladeshis have found employment in Singapore.
Experts say that the government needs to increase investment to build need-based skilled manpower, such as doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers. Because their demand will increase in various countries in the future.
Although the government has already established many training centers in various districts of the country and has launched skill development programmes to create skilled manpower.
Among these trainings are diplomas in Naval Architecture, General Mechanics, Electrical Appliance Maintenance, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning, Auto CAD 2D and 3D, Welding (6G), Catering, Masonry, and various other skill development programmes including learning Korean, Arabic, and Japanese languages.
