A Dhaka court has rejected the bail petition of actor Zaher Alvi, also known as Md Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, and ordered him to be sent to jail in connection with a case over allegations of abetting the suicide of his wife, Afra Ibnat Ikra.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin passed the order when he surrendered before the court on Thursday .
After hearing the arguments, the court rejected the bail petition and directed the authorities to send him to jail.
The allegations against Alvi pertain to the suicide of his wife, Afra Ibnat Ikra.
State Prosecutor Harun-or-Rashid confirmed the court’s decision.
According to the case statement, on 28 February, family members found Afra Ibnat Ikra hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf tied around her neck at a residence in Mirpur DOHS in the capital. She was later taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
That night, the victim’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case with Mirpur Model Police Station. He alleged that prolonged family disputes and various forms of abuse had compelled his daughter to take her own life. Zaher Alvi and others were named in the case on charges of abetting suicide.
