A young man was reportedly beaten to death on Friday night in Sitakunda, with police detaining one suspect in connection with the incident.
The victim Md Raju, 30, son of Md Harun, a resident of Abdul Khalek Sareng Bari in Madam Bibirhat area under Ward No. 2 of Bhatiari Union. He was a father of two children.
According to local sources and family members, a dispute erupted between two groups in the area shortly before Iftar on Friday.
During the altercation, Raju’s relative, Md Azam became involved, but Raju reportedly intervened to stop the fight.
Witnesses said Azam, along with his sons, later allegedly called Raju out of his home and assaulted him. Raju was reportedly struck with bricks, sustaining critical injuries that led to his death at the scene around 9pm in Madam Bibirhat.
Raju’s sister, Tahmina Akhter, said Azam is a maternal relative. “He called my brother at night because he had objected to the fight earlier. When I dialed 999, police arrived and recovered the body,” she said.
Officer-in-Charge Md Mohinul Islam of Sitakunda Police Station said the body was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
“The main accused, Azam has been detained and is being questioned. A case will be filed in connection with the incident,” he added.
