A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking a judicial and human rights investigation into the death of 75-year-old Nurjahan Begum, whose body was recovered from a flat in the capital’s Mirpur-11 area.
The public interest litigation was submitted on Wednesday by Supreme Court lawyer Sharif Sarker, seeking directives for an inquiry by the National Human Rights Commission into possible human rights violations, along with a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Police recovered Nurjahan Begum’s body on Sunday night from the fourth floor of a residential building in Mirpur.
Following the recovery, her daughter, Fatima Nasrin Sultana, 52, filed an unnatural death case with the local police station.
According to family sources, the deceased had three sons and one daughter.
One son is a joint secretary, another is a university teacher, while the third resides in Canada.
However, local residents alleged that the elderly woman was not regularly cared for or visited by her family members.
The incident has drawn public attention, with the High Court expected to schedule a hearing on the petition soon, according to court sources.
