BNP will select candidates for reserved women’s seats based on their role in political movements, parliamentary speaking ability, and social reputation, said the party’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed.
Speaking to journalists at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan on Saturday morning, Rizvi said the party would prioritise individuals who have contributed to past movements and possess strong debating and legislative skills.
He expressed confidence that the selection process would focus on merit and contribution. “Those who have played roles in movements, have the ability to speak in parliament, and enjoy respect in society will be considered,” he said.
Rizvi said nomination forms for reserved women’s seats began being sold on Friday, with distribution continuing from 10am on Saturday. The process will run for three days, ending on Sunday, he added.
According to him, around 500 nomination forms have already been issued, and many applicants have submitted their documents. A selection board comprising senior BNP leaders will review the applications, he said, adding that the final process will be announced shortly.
He said the party expects to follow a democratic and structured process similar to its selection of Members of Parliament. Applicants are required to collect forms, complete them, and submit necessary documents for evaluation.
Rizvi also said the current political environment reflects a return to democratic practices after what he described as 16 to 17 years of struggle.
He said such an opportunity should be utilised to strengthen democratic norms and accountability.
He added that people should be able to see a functioning democratic system where both ruling and opposition parties operate under transparent and accountable procedures.
Referring to women’s participation, Rizvi said women had played a significant role in past political movements and had also faced repression, including arrests for expressing opinions. He reiterated that the party would give priority to those with proven contributions and capabilities.
The deadline for collecting and submitting nomination forms for reserved women’s seats is Sunday.
