Police recovered the hanging body of an unidentified young woman from a bathroom at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Monday morning.

A team from Shahbagh Police Station recovered the body around 10:30am. The woman’s age and identity could not be immediately determined.

Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the Dhaka Medical Police Camp, confirmed the incident. He said a hospital cleaner first spotted the woman’s hanging body inside the bathroom in the morning.

Police rushed to the scene and found the woman hanging from an overhead iron pipe, with a scarf (orna) tied around her neck. A large quantity of blood had dripped from her body and accumulated on the floor.

The Officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station and a police team also arrived at the scene. It has not yet been ascertained whether the woman was a hospital patient, a visitor or someone from outside.

According to DMCH cleaning staff, three cleaners went to clean the patients’ bathroom adjacent to Ward Nos 110 and 111 around 10am.

They found one bathroom door locked from inside and continued cleaning the other bathrooms. After getting no response despite repeated calls, they kicked the door open and found the hanging body inside.

The cleaners said the door has no internal latch. It is usually secured with a rope from inside, leaving a small gap. Someone outside can reach through the gap to tie or untie the rope.

An on-the-spot inspection also found a large opening in the bathroom ventilator. A person could potentially exit through it.

Considering these circumstances, law enforcement agencies are treating the incident as suspicious and investigating all possibilities.
