Gazipur‑4 lawmaker Salahuddin Ayubi told parliament that by withdrawing Deputy Commissioner Sarwoer Alam, known for his tough stance against corruption, the government has encouraged graft.
Speaking during the proposed 2026‑27 budget session on Thursday, he said Sarwoer, recognised as an honest and efficient officer for tackling irregularities at shrines and other sectors, was taken off duty.
At the same time, the government weakened its anti‑corruption position by cutting allocations for the Anti‑Corruption Commission.
Ayubi said, “This is not only a budget that hurts the poor, but it also harasses them. The government is presenting a debt‑dependent budget while failing to take effective steps to control corruption, instead widening opportunities for it.”
He added that establishing good governance and reducing corruption requires strong political will, but the government is moving in the opposite direction.
Removing an honest and skilled officer like Sarwoer and reducing the ACC’s allocation sends a clear message, he added.
Ayubi further alleged the proposed budget will not benefit the people but will increase pressure on ordinary citizens. He said corruption is ongoing under the cover of development projects and social programmes.
Citing the school feeding programme, he claimed about Tk17 crore is embezzled weekly. He also accused the government of creating new avenues of corruption under various project names.
