Popular West Bengal actress Madhumita Sarcar is set to make her Bangladeshi film debut.
After expressing her desire to work in Bangladesh for years, the actress has now joined director Mohammad Iqbal’s upcoming film Gulshaner Chameli in a key role.
Confirming the news to a Bangladeshi media outlet over the phone from Kolkata, Madhumita said she was excited about the project.
“I’ve wanted to work in Bangladesh for many years. There were several opportunities in the past, but they never materialised for different reasons. Finally, that wish is coming true. I’ll be there very soon,” she said.
The actress revealed that she signed the project recently after being impressed by both the story and her character.
“The story is excellent, and I instantly liked my role. I’ve done many different kinds of work in Kolkata, but I’ve never played a character like this. It has many layers, which makes it even more exciting,” she added.
According to the makers, Gulshaner Chameli explores politics, abuse of power and the dark realities of elite society.
The story centres on a sex worker who repeatedly becomes a victim of power despite committing no crime. Unlike conventional commercial films, the story revolves entirely around a female protagonist rather than a traditional hero.
If everything goes according to plan, filming will begin in November or December.
The remaining cast, including Madhumita’s co-stars, has yet to be finalised.
Speaking about the schedule, the actress said shooting is expected to begin after the next three to four months.
She also noted that she has not yet been informed about the rest of the cast.
Madhumita said she feels grateful for the love she has received from Bangladeshi audiences over the years.
“I’ve always known I have many fans in Bangladesh, especially since Bojhena Se Bojhena. A large part of the love I’ve received throughout my career has come from Bangladeshi viewers. I’m grateful to them and can’t wait to meet them,” she said.
She also revealed that she regularly watches Bangladeshi dramas, web content and films.
Among her favourites are Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s Piprabidya, Television and Third Person Singular Number, as well as Gias Uddin Selim’s Monpura.
Praising Bangladeshi artistes, Madhumita said she admires the country’s storytelling style.
She described Mosharraf Karim as one of her favourite actors and noted that they have worked together before.
She also expressed her wish to work with Chanchal Chowdhury and said she would love the opportunity to share the screen with Shakib Khan, whom she called Bangladesh’s biggest superstar.
Although this marks her first appearance in a Bangladeshi feature film, Madhumita is no stranger to local audiences.
She previously won praise for her performance in the 2016 NTV drama Meghbalika. With Gulshaner Chameli, she is now set to begin a new chapter in Bangladesh’s film industry.
