BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman spoke at a press conference for the first time after his party’s victory in two-thirds of the seats confirmed the formation of a government by the BNP. He also answered various questions regarding bringing Sheikh Hasina back, relations with India, and other matters.
On the question of bringing back Bangladesh’s deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Tarique Rahman said, “It depends on the legal process.”
In response to a question about what plan exists to resolve or reconcile issues, considering that many supporters of the Awami League exist among the people of Bangladesh, Tarique mentioned that the solution lies in “ensuring the rule of law.”
Answering another question on whether the verdicts or decisions of the International Crimes Tribunal would be reconsidered, BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said, “This is a matter for the judiciary.” Regarding the International Crimes Tribunal, he spoke of keeping “the judiciary separate from the functions of the executive and the legislature.”
Although another question was raised about whether the BNP government would continue corruption cases against Sheikh Hasina, no answer was given to that at the press conference.
During the entire press conference held on Saturday, Tarique Rahman spoke briefly. In the subsequent question-and-answer session, answers were also given very concisely.
In a written statement thanking the political parties that participated in the election, the people, and those involved in the electoral process, it was mentioned that “this victory establishing democracy and people’s rights has been celebrated peacefully and responsibly.” It also stated that despite provocations after the election, BNP leaders and activists at all levels were urged to remain calm and vigilant.
