Water on Earth is older than Earth itself. It sounds like something written for a museum wall, but it is simply true. Some of the water in rivers, in storms, in the human body, was already old before this planet existed. Scientists know this because of isotope ratios, which is the kind of answer that makes the fact feel smaller than it is.
Hydrogen showed up early, shortly after the Big Bang. Oxygen took longer, built inside stars that eventually died and threw their contents outward. Somewhere in the cold and dark between star systems, the two found each other and became ice. This happened billions of years before the Solar System formed. By the time the Sun ignited, and the planets began pulling themselves together, water was already in the room.
For a while the working theory was comets. It made sense on paper. A newly formed planet, dry and hot, gets bombarded from space over millions of years until water accumulates. The problem is the isotopes again. Comet water does not match what is in Earth’s oceans. Carbonaceous chondrites, a type of ancient meteorite, fit better. Some water probably came with the planet as it formed. Some arrived through impacts afterward. How much from each source is still being argued, with the kind of patience and stubbornness that long academic careers produce.
Zircon crystals from Western Australia, dated to around 4.4 billion years ago, are the oldest physical evidence that liquid water existed on early Earth. At that point the planet was still being regularly struck by debris, much of its surface was molten, and the idea of a stable ocean seems almost absurd. The crystals suggest otherwise.
Keeping the water was never given. Mars dried out. Venus, which may have had oceans, is now a place where the clouds are made of sulphuric acid and the surface temperature sits above 400 degrees. Earth kept its water because of its magnetic field, its geology, and a sequence of conditions that worked out in its favour. Scientists have more precise language for this. The more precise language means the same thing.
The water does not know any of this. It moves through the same cycle it has always moved through, from cloud to river to ocean to cloud, passing through glaciers, groundwater, and living bodies along the way. A molecule in the Buriganga today has been somewhere else before. Many places, probably.
People treat water as sacred in conversation and as a disposal system in practice. The oldest substance on Earth, older than the Earth, now carries sewage and microplastics to the sea. It goes, because it has always gone, and takes everything with it.
