Sangeetha Sornalingam, wife of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay, has withdrawn her divorce petition, bringing the case to an end after months of adjournments.
According to NDTV, Sangeetha joined Friday’s hearing through video conference and told the court why she no longer wanted to pursue the petition. The Chengalpattu family court then formally closed the case.
Sangeetha filed for divorce in February, seeking dissolution of the couple’s marriage over irreconcilable differences. She also sought permanent alimony and permission to continue living in their matrimonial home in Neelankarai, Chennai.
The case faced several delays. On 15 June, Sangeetha had indicated that she wanted to withdraw the petition. The court then fixed 7 August for the next hearing. Last month, the court deferred the matter after neither Sangeetha nor Vijay appeared, with their lawyers citing difficulties in attending in person.
Vijay and Sangeetha married in Chennai on 25 August 1999 in a traditional Hindu ceremony. They have two children — a son born in 2000 and a daughter born in 2005.
Questions over their marriage intensified in 2023 after Sangeetha missed several public events involving Vijay. The speculation resurfaced in 2025 when she was absent from major TVK events, including the party’s second state conference.
Vijay’s political career has since added another layer to the public interest surrounding the couple. TVK is described by NDTV as having emerged as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election and subsequently forming a coalition government with Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML.
