The Election Commission has published the draft of the updated voter list ahead of the upcoming local government elections, with the total number of voters standing at 12,86,32,555.
EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed disclosed the total voter count to reporters at the Election Commission building on Sunday.
He said voters who turned 18 by 31 July have been included in the draft list.
The commission has appointed 154 officials as revising authorities to deal with claims, objections and applications for corrections to the voter list.
According to an EC notification, the officials have been assigned across all 64 districts and various cantonment areas. They will process applications seeking inclusion in the voter list, objections to entries and corrections to voter information.
Under the Voter List Act, 2009, claims can be submitted using Form-6, objections through Form-7 and applications for corrections through Form-8 after publication of the draft list.
According to the EC’s schedule, claims, objections and correction applications will be accepted until 24 August.
The revising authorities will dispose of the applications by 27 August.
Decisions on the applications will be incorporated into the voter list by 28 August, while the updated final voter list is scheduled to be published on 31 August.
The latest final voter list showed that the country had 12,83,23,240 registered voters.
Of them, 6,52,12,731 were men, 6,31,09,266 women and 1,243 were transgender voters.
With the newly registered voters included, the total has increased by 3,09,315 to 12,86,32,555.
The EC said the figure could change slightly before the final voter list is published.
