Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage has said he may not work with Amazon again after refusing to sign an artificial intelligence (AI) waiver for the series Spider-Noir.
Speaking at New York Comic Con on Saturday, Cage criticised the company’s approach to AI and said he was uncomfortable with allowing the technology to be used on the show.
“Amazon is a very AI-friendly company, to the tune of $50 billion invested in OpenAI. I am not an AI-friendly actor, so it’s like, connect those dots! I’m not a member of their club. I didn’t sign the waiver to let them use AI on ‘Spider Noir.’ I’m probably not going to be working with that studio again, but that’s okay,” he said.
Despite positive reviews and multiple Emmy wins, Spider-Noir was cancelled after one season. Cage played Ben Reilly, a private investigator in 1930s New York who confronts his past while serving as the city’s only superhero.
At the event, Cage also expressed interest in working with younger filmmakers, particularly Gen Z directors who create films using hands-on techniques.
“I got to get with these young directors who are Gen Z, and they’re going at it their own way, whether it’s through the YouTube culture or whatever it is. They’re doing it from scratch and by hand. I want to get with that,” he said.
Cage also revealed that he would appear in the fifth season of HBO’s crime anthology series True Detective.
