Bangladeshi film Chirkut, a story of youth, friendship and romance set on the University of Rajshahi campus in the 1990s, is set to release in cinemas on 16 October ahead of Durga Puja.
Based on a true story, the film has drawn attention following the release of its trailer. Its romantic song Preme Gelam Dube has also received a positive response, according to those involved in the project.
Written and directed by Muntasir Akib and produced by Film Mania, Chirkut seeks to recreate a bygone era when university life was shaped by youthful dreams, close friendships, romance and the experiences of growing up.
The filmmaker said his aim was not simply to tell a story but to help audiences experience the atmosphere and emotions of the 1990s through the big screen.
The film features a large ensemble cast, including Shyamal Mawla, Azizun Mim, Kazi Nawshaba, Sumon Patoary, Tehzib, Abdullah Al Sentu, Sanjib Ahmed, Shawon Ashraf, Iqbal, Azmal Mithu, Siam Nasir, Shimul, Sadi Khan, Shamim Ahsan, Sheikh Chandni, Mahira Hasan and Ibrahim Sujon, among others.
Alongside professional actors, a large number of University of Rajshahi students have also participated in the production, adding a connection to the campus whose memories and youthful spirit form the heart of the film.
Expressing his excitement over the response to the teaser, trailer and song, Akib said he was overwhelmed by the audience’s enthusiasm.
“Chirkut is an authentic Bengali film. Our aim is for audiences not just to watch a story but to experience an entire era,” he said, adding that he hoped the film would enhance the Durga Puja celebrations.
With its nostalgic setting and focus on friendship and first love, Chirkut is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 16 October.
