Veteran Bangladeshi actor, playwright and director Abul Hayat has starred in Obohela, a television drama directed by Zia Uddin Alam for the first time.

Written by Ferari Farhad, the drama has been produced for release on Laser Vision’s YouTube channel.

Speaking about the project, Hayat also shared his concerns about the use of language in contemporary television dramas, arguing that urban stories often feature distorted speech.

He welcomed the growing popularity of family-centred dramas but said greater care was needed in how characters speak.

“It is good to see so many family dramas being made these days. However, I still have concerns about the use of language. We need to get it right. If a story is set in a rural community, it is appropriate for the characters to speak in the local dialect. But in dramas about urban life, language is often distorted. I believe this needs to change,” he said.

Hayat added that more careful use of language could help restore the traditions of Bangladeshi television drama. He praised Obohela for its clean storyline and said Alam had taken care in bringing the production to the screen.

“I am very conscious of language. The story of Zia Uddin Alam’s drama is well presented, and he has made an effort to produce it with care. I hope audiences will enjoy it,” he said.

Alam said directing a drama featuring Hayat was a first for him and that he had tried to build the production around a strong story and a meaningful role for the veteran actor.

“This is the first drama I have made with Hayat sir. I tried to choose a good story and give his character the importance it deserves. We will know how audiences receive it after its release,” he said, thanking Laser Vision and its team for supporting his work.

Meanwhile, Hayat said he plans to work on several dramas towards the end of this month. He is also set to produce two dramas for Channel i, one for the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr and another for Eid-ul-Azha.

The actor has maintained the tradition of making dramas for the two major Eid celebrations in recent years.
