Radhika Apte says the uncertainty surrounding theatrical releases leaves actresses with limited opportunities to lead films, arguing that only major stars such as Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone can give producers hope of a strong opening, states NDTV.

In an interview with PTI, Apte said she does not choose projects based on whether they will reach cinemas or streaming platforms. However, she believes a film led by her could struggle at the box office even if it were exceptionally good.

“I’m not an Alia Bhatt or Deepika Padukone where you can, at least, hope that they’ll be opening,” she said, adding that commercial considerations often push her towards films in which male actors play the central roles.

Apte also criticised the popularity of violent films, saying she finds graphic on-screen brutality absurd and does not want to be part of such projects.

The actor said motherhood has changed her priorities. She now values reasonable working hours and spending more time with her daughter, whom she and her husband, Benedict Taylor, welcomed in 2024. She has also taken a break partly to focus on writing.

Apte will next appear alongside Keerthy Suresh in the Netflix series ‘Akka’, set to premiere on 30 October.
