A Dhaka court on Sunday rescheduled the date for delivering the verdict in the case involving the murders of an elderly woman and a domestic worker in the capital’s Dhanmondi area in 2019.
Dhaka’s Seventh Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Tauhida Akter, fixed the new date for the verdict.
The verdict was originally slated for Sunday, and the two accused were produced before the court from jail; however, the court deferred the date as the judgment was not yet ready.
The lawyer for the plaintiff, Khalilur Rahman Asad, confirmed the development.
The accused are: Bachuchu Miah, worker of Afroza Begum’s house and Surobhi Akter Nahid, domestic help.
According to the case documents, on 1 November, 2019, the mother-in-law of businessman Kazi Monir Uddin Tarim, Afroza Begum, 65, and her domestic worker Diti, 18, were found murdered at their home in the capital.
The two women were discovered lying in a pool of blood on the fifth floor of a building known as Lobelia House in the Dhanmondi area, with investigators later confirming that both had their throats slit.
Afroza Begum lived in the apartment where the bodies were found, while her daughter Dilruba Sultana Ruba lived with her husband and children in a duplex on the floor above, as well as in an adjacent flat on the sixth floor.
Two days after the killings were discovered, Ruba filed a murder case with the authorities.
On 1 February, 2022, following an investigation by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Investigating Officer Mojibur Rahman submitted a charge sheet against two individuals Bachchu Mia and Surabhi Akter Nahid.
On 11 October, the same year, the court framed charges against the accused, formally launching the trial. During the proceedings, 25 of the 32 listed witnesses gave testimony in court.
