The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has reportedly seized smuggled goods worth over Tk131.97 crore across the country’s border and other regions during the first month of 2026.
This January, the haul included 940.176 grams of gold, 14.337 kg of silver, 21,271 sarees, 3,605 ready-made garments, 2,182 metres of cloth, 4,03,427 cosmetic items, 2,595 pieces of imitation jewellery, 28,33,669 fireworks, 11,451 cubic feet of timber, 8,929 kg of tea leaves, 21,659 kg of betel nuts, 29,460 kg of coal, 1,250 cubic feet of stone, 371 mobile phones, 3,789 mobile parts, 30,575 pairs of spectacles, 41,703 kg of cumin, 9,786 kg of sugar, 8,735 kg of onions, 7,409 kg of garlic, 8,241 packets of various seeds, 18,799 kg of fertiliser, 2,745 packets of pesticides, 538 litres of diesel, 4,17,511 chocolates, 973 cows and buffaloes, and one stone statue.
Vehicles seized included 10 trucks and covered vans, 12 pickups, five private cars and microbuses, one trolley, 29 CNGs and e-rickshaws, 52 motorcycles, and 22 bicycles and vans.
Arms recovered included 14 pistols (domestic and foreign), one hand grenade, 13 magazines, 185 rounds of ammunition, one mortar shell, one cocktail, and 28 other weapons.
The BGB also seized substantial quantities of drugs. These included 12.33 lakh yaba tablets, 1.73 kg of heroin, 1,156 bottles of phensidyl, 8,970 bottles of foreign liquor, 198 litres of Bangla liquor, 1,216 cans of beer, 1,929.05 kg of cannabis, 2.68 lakh packets of bidis and cigarettes, 96,638 narcotic tablets and injections, 6,079 bottles of eskuf syrup, 16,256 anegra/senegra tablets, and 13.15 lakh assorted medicines and other tablets.
In connection with drug trafficking and smuggling, the BGB arrested 172 smugglers. Additionally, 114 Bangladeshi citizens, five Indian nationals, and 159 Myanmar citizens were detained for illegally crossing the border. Legal action has been taken against all those apprehended.
The BGB’s January operation highlights the force’s sustained crackdown on smuggling and drug trafficking, reflecting its commitment to safeguarding Bangladesh’s borders and curbing cross-border crime.
