The number of deaths from suspected and confirmed measles cases in Bangladesh has reached 1,002 since 15 March, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Of the total deaths, 902 were recorded among suspected measles patients, while 100 were confirmed measles-related deaths, DGHS data showed.
According to the DGHS Integrated Control Centre’s health bulletin issued on Wednesday, 1,119 new suspected measles cases were reported between 8am on 8 September and 8am on 9 September.
During the same period, 69 cases were confirmed as measles, while three suspected measles patients died.
Since 15 March, the total number of suspected measles cases has reached 167,580, while 19,904 cases have been confirmed through laboratory tests.
During this period, 147,393 suspected measles patients were hospitalised, and 141,819 were discharged after treatment.
Dhaka division reported the highest number of suspected measles cases, with 72,038 cases and 404 suspected measles deaths since 15 March.
The division also recorded 12,195 confirmed measles cases and 63 confirmed measles deaths.
Chattogram division reported 32,936 suspected cases and 65 suspected measles deaths. The division recorded 2,711 confirmed cases and 10 confirmed measles deaths.
In Barishal division, the number of suspected cases stood at 18,360, with 57 suspected measles deaths.
Meanwhile, the ongoing measles-rubella vaccination campaign has exceeded its target.
Against a target of vaccinating 1,80,15,064 people across eight divisions, a total of 1,97,46,773 people have received vaccines so far, bringing overall coverage to 109.6 per cent.
According to DGHS data, Dhaka recorded the highest number of new suspected measles cases in the past 24 hours at 427. It was followed by Chattogram with 220 cases, Sylhet with 183 and Barishal with 138.
