US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen paid a courtesy call on Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman at the party’s Bashundhara office in Dhaka on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, Michael Miller, ambassador of the European Union to Bangladesh, met Shafiqur Rahman at his office in Bashundhara. The EU ambassador was accompanied by Political First Secretary Sebastian Reiger-Brown.
According to a press release, the meeting between US Ambassador Christensen and Shafiqur was held in a friendly and cordial environment, with both sides discussing various matters of mutual interest.
Key topics of discussion included Bangladesh’s political and economic conditions, industrial growth, and the upcoming parliamentary election. The leaders also addressed the necessity of state reforms and the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis.
Both parties expressed a shared interest in strengthening the bilateral relationship between the US and Bangladesh.
During the exchange, Ambassador Christensen praised the role of Jamaat in the nation’s economic development and democratic progress. He further expressed his hope for continued positive engagement and cooperation between the two nations.
The US Ambassador was accompanied by several senior officials from the embassy, including Political and Economic Affairs Counsellor Eric Gilman, Public Affairs Officer Monica L Shie, Political Officer James Stewart, and Political Specialist Firoz Ahmed.
Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur was joined by Assistant Secretary General and Head of the Central Publicity and Media Department Advocate Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair; Central Executive Council Member Mobarak Hossain; and Mahmudul Hasan, Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Ameer.
According to another press release, the EU Ambassador and Jamaat Ameer discussed various issues of mutual interest between Bangladesh and the European Union. The upcoming parliamentary election and the importance of making democracy meaningful were given special emphasis.
Both expressed optimism that mutual relations, development, and progress between the two sides will continue in the future, the release said.
