Venezuela’s interior minister Diosdado Cabello said late on Wednesday that around 100 people died in the US military attack that removed President Nicolás Maduro from power on Saturday, marking the first casualty figure officially released by Caracas.
Cabello said that Caracas had not previously given a death toll, though the Venezuelan army had posted a list of 23 of its dead, and officials have alleged that many members of Maduro’s security forces were killed “in cold blood.” Cuban authorities have also said members of their military and intelligence services in Venezuela died in the operation.
He added that Maduro’s wife, Cilia Flores, suffered a head injury during the raid and that Maduro sustained a leg injury.
On Tuesday, Venezuela declared a week of mourning for military personnel killed in the attack, and Cabello, speaking on state television, praised Venezuelan forces for their “courage” during the assault.
