A moderate cold wave is sweeping across several districts, with dense fog and biting cold bringing daily life to a near standstill.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the temperature dropped to 7 degrees Celsius on Thursday morning in Moulvibazar. Daily wage earners, labourers, and tea garden workers are suffering the most, with many losing income.
People are seen lighting fires for warmth and bundling up in thick clothing, while health facilities report a surge in patients with fever, coughs, and respiratory issues.
Similarly, public life has ground to a halt due to a continuous cold wave, with temperatures recorded at 8.0 degrees Celsius in Meherpur. Business activity has plummeted as shops open late and close early, and vehicular movement is minimal.
The working class, including rickshaw pullers and day labourers, faces extreme distress and lost wages.
Alok Kumar, a physician at Meherpur General Hospital, said, “Children, the elderly, and pregnant women must be given special care during severe cold. Apart from warm clothing, consuming hot and nutritious food is essential. At this time, the risk of cold‑related illnesses such as diarrhea, pneumonia, coughs, colds, and fever increases, posing danger for everyone.”
Rickshaw puller Abdul Rayhan said his earnings have halved, fearing starvation if the cold persists. Business trader Moniruzzaman Dipu in the locality said sales of his goods have declined.
In Chuadanga, a moderate cold wave continues for a third day, with a low of 8.0 degrees Celsius and 94 percent humidity.
Chuadanga Weather Officer Jaminur Rahman confirmed the persistent cold conditions, noting Wednesday’s season‑low of 6.9 degrees Celsius and warning that low temperatures may continue. Icy winds and fog have left public life in disarray, with people staying indoors.
