A leader of the The United People’s Democratic Front (Democratic) was shot dead in Panchhari, Khagrachari, on Friday morning.
The incident occurred around 9am in Sutakorm Para when assailants shot him at close range and fled the scene.
The deceased, Niti Dutta Chakma, 45, was the Panchhari Upazila organiser of UPDF (Democratic).
Locals said he was sitting in a shop in Sutakorm Para when unidentified attackers approached and opened fire from close range.
Niti Dutta was the son of Barnonatit Chakma of North Shantipur in Panchhari. He was rushed to Khagrachhari District Sadar Hospital, where Joya Tripura, the on-duty physician, confirmed that he had been shot dead.
He was pronounced dead before arrival at the hospital.
Panchhari police officer-in-charge Ferdous Wahid said “Police reached the scene following reports of the attack.”
He could not provide further details at this stage.
UPDF (Democratic) central organiser Amar Chakma blamed the pro-government faction of UPDF (Prasit) for the killing. Attempts to obtain a response from the accused faction were unsuccessful.
