A partial panel called ‘Sangsaptak’, consisting of the Students’ Union (part) and Bangladesh Students’ Front, has been announced for the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) elections.
On Saturday, at 1pm, Jahidul Islam Emon, president of a faction of the Bangladesh Students Union JU branch, announced the panel at a press conference held in front of the university’s Shaheed Minar.
Emon will contest for the post of General Secretary (GS) from the Sanshptak panel, while Sohagi Samia Jannatul Ferdous, organiser of the Socialist Students’ Front JU branch, will contest for the post of Joint General Secretary (Women).
At the press conference, GS candidate Emon said, “The Sangshaptak panel represents the democratic unity of progressive students. We are contesting with commitments to ensuring a safe and inclusive campus, fair electoral practices, and enhancing the quality of education. Our plans include implementing practical programmes for student welfare, research support, and establishing an open library system.”
He further stated, “We are backing a candidate for VP who has consistently supported students with progressive demands and actively upheld the spirit of the Liberation War. In addition, after extensive discussions with other organizations, we have finalised nominations for certain specific posts.”
The Election Commission released the final list of candidates for the JUCSU elections, which will be held after more than three decades, on August 29. A total of 179 candidates will contest against 25 posts. According to the announced schedule, the voting will be held on September 11.
