Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon on Saturday said the government has taken an initiative to distribute school uniforms among nearly 4.5 lakh primary school students by July.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the four-storey Bishweshwar Poddar Bhaban of Panchami Ghat High School in Sonargaon, Narayanganj.
The minister said the government is working to make primary education more quality-based and enjoyable. As part of the initiative, school uniforms will be provided to around 4.5 lakh students across the country in July.
He also said multimedia classrooms are being introduced alongside plans to establish sports and debate clubs in schools to improve the overall quality of education.
Milon further said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has given highest priority to the education sector, adding that a mid-day meal programme will soon be introduced in all primary schools nationwide under the government’s plan.
He said education should not be limited to rote learning or achieving high grades, but should be made more enjoyable and practical. For this purpose, the government has already begun revising and updating textbooks.
The minister also said efforts are underway to transform the country’s large population into skilled human resources through the introduction of a third language and greater emphasis on technical education.
He added that a policy is being considered regarding the nationalisation of century-old schools.
Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad ABM Ashraf Uddin Nizan, Narayanganj-3 lawmaker Azharul Islam Mannan, Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Raihan Kabir and Superintendent of Police Md Mizanur Rahman Munshi attended the event as special guests.
Sonargaon Upazila Nirbahi Officer Asif Al Zinat presided over the programme, while School Management Committee President Dr Nusrat Fatema delivered the welcome address.
