University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) has observed the International Mother Language Day with due solemnity and profound respect on Saturday.
The programme began at 8am with an early morning procession (Probhat Pheri), organised to pay homage to the language martyrs, according to a press release.
The procession marched around the university premises and concluded at the ULAB Shaheed Minar. Trustees of the university, along with representatives from various faculties and the administration, including teachers, students, officers, and staff, placed floral wreaths at the Shaheed Minar in tribute to the martyrs.
Following the wreath-laying, a one-minute silence was observed in their memory. An ensuing discussion session commenced with an inaugural address by ULAB Acting Vice-Chancellor Jude William Genilo.
He highlighted the significance of the historic Language Movement and emphasised the importance of nurturing respect for and practice of the mother tongue among the younger generation.
Later, newly appointed Vice-Chancellor Shamsad Mortuza addressed the gathering, recalling the supreme sacrifices of the language martyrs and calling upon all to work collectively to preserve language and culture.
The keynote speech was delivered by Shahnaj Husne Jahan, professor and head of the General Education Department, who elaborated on the historical context and significance of the Language Movement, as well as the responsibilities of the present generation.
The programme was attended by the university treasurer, registrar, faculty members, deans of various schools, heads of departments, and officers and staff, who participated enthusiastically.
