Police detained six leaders and activists of Awami League in Companyganj upazila of Noakhali early Saturday as they were preparing to place wreaths at a Shaheed Minar marking International Mother Language Day.
The detainees were identified as Md Sohel, 45, and Md Humayun Kabir, 40, of Musapur Union; Md Humayun Kabir, 40, Sheikh Farid, 40, and Sirajul Haque Monju, 35, of Sirajpur Union; and Jahangir Alam, 45, of Charhajari Union.
The arrests were made between 3am and 4am in the Basurhat Bazar area, while Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Nurul Hakim of Companyganj Police Station confirmed the matter around noon.
According to police and local sources, 10 to 15 supporters of Awami League, whose political activities were banned by the interim government on 12 May, 2025, had gathered at different points in Basurhat Bazar to observe International Mother Language Day.
As they organised to proceed to the Basurhat Central Shaheed Minar to pay tribute to the language martyrs, police launched a drive and detained six individuals from the spot.
OC Nurul Hakim said the detained individuals were initially identified as Awami League supporters.
Their identities are being further verified, and legal action will be taken upon completion of the investigation.
