The United Kingdom will assist Bangladesh in modernizing its customs administration and advancing the ongoing reform process.
On Monday, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) of Bangladesh and the UK Government’s revenue authority signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to streamline border processes and strengthen trust with international trading partners.
A press release issued by the UK High Commission in Dhaka stated that the MoU outlines a framework for technical assistance and capacity building, delivered by experts from His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
This will help NBR in implementing key customs reforms, including support for the World Trade Organisation’s Trade Facilitation Agreement, development of risk management systems, and expansion of the recently launched Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) programme.
The initiatives aim to improve border processes and foster greater trust with international trading partners.
Under the MoU, HMRC will provide both in-person and remote training sessions for NBR staff, offer technical advice on customs reform and trade facilitation, facilitate peer-to-peer learning, and arrange short-term staff exchanges.
Additionally, HMRC will support the development of customs risk profiling and information-sharing systems to enhance the efficiency of Bangladesh’s customs operations.
