A court in Dhaka has sentenced two men to life imprisonment for the murder of a trawler driver in Savar more than two decades ago.
Judge Md Abdullah Al Masud of the Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court-7 delivered the verdict on Sunday.
The court also fined each convict Tk 10,000, in default , they will have to serve an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.
The convicts are Md Abdur Mannan and Chanu Mia, also known as Maruf.
As Chanu Mia remained absconding during the verdict, the court issued an arrest warrant against him.
According to the prosecution, trawler driver Mortuza Ali went missing on 26 July, 2005, after leaving his residence in Savar’s Aminbazar area to purchase diesel.
Four days later, on 30 July, his mutilated body was recovered from beneath water hyacinth in Shyamolasi haor area.
Investigators found that on the day of the incident, the accused hired the victim’s trawler and took him to the southern part of Shyamolasi haor, where he was allegedly killed and his body dumped in water in an attempt to conceal the crime.
Police later arrested the accused and recovered the victim’s trawler from their possession. The case was filed by the victim’s uncle Md Ibrahim with Savar Police Station.
Following investigation, police submitted a charge sheet on 28 May, 2006.
During the trial, the prosecution examined seven witnesses. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court delivered its verdict on Sunday.
In its judgment, the court observed that charges under Sections 302/34 of the Penal Code had been proven beyond reasonable doubt.
It also directed that the period of custody already served by the convicts would be deducted from their sentences.
