A Dhaka court has placed two suspects on remand in a case over the killing of a former Swechchhasebak Dal leader in the capital’s Mouchak area.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain on Wednesday granted five-day remand for Riazul Hasan and four-day remand for Al Amin Mahin after hearing a petition from the investigating officer.
State counsel Muhammad Shamsuddoha Suman confirmed the court order.
Police said Al Amin was arrested from Dhaka, while Riazul was detained from Munshiganj on Monday night.
Investigating officer Inspector Atikul Alam Khandaker of Ramna Model Police Station had sought a 10-day remand for both accused.
According to the case statement, Billal Hossain Talukder, former convener of Ramna Thana unit Swechchhasebak Dal, was called to the Anarkali Market area in Mouchak on Monday evening under the pretext of an arbitration meeting. He was later attacked near the lift and staircase area of the market.
The complaint states that the attackers assaulted him with hockey sticks, leaving him in critical condition. At one stage, he was held down while Riazul allegedly stabbed him in the chest.
His nephew, Mobarak Hossain Akash, was also injured in the attack.
Billal was initially taken to a private hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 9:45 pm.
Following the incident, Billal’s wife Ambia Khatun filed a murder case with Ramna Model Police Station on Tuesday, naming 21 people and accusing 7 to 8 unidentified individuals.
Police said the arrests were made from Dhaka and Munshiganj following the incident.
The case documents suggest that long-standing disputes over extortion, control of shop allocations and business operations in the Anarkali Market area may have led to the killing.
