Two minor girls drowned while bathing in a bill in the Veluarchar area of Srinagar Union under Raipura Upazila in Narsingdi on Friday. The tragic incident occurred at noon, marking the second such drowning in the upazila within 24 hours.
The deceased were identified as Nipa Akter, 7, daughter of Saddam Mia, and Jannati Akter, 11, daughter of Nuruzzaman. Both were residents of the Veluarchar area.
According to the relatives of the deceased, the two children went to bathe in the Veluarchar bill on Friday afternoon. Due to recent heavy rainfall, water level had risen significantly leading to their drowning at the scene.
Raipura Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mujibur Rahman confirmed the deaths and said the bodies of the two children have been kept at the Raipura Upazila Health Complex.
The OC added that necessary legal measures will be taken following discussions with the victims’ families.
